The World of Musicals

This is a very interesting module that I'm reading at KAIST.... We learn about famous musicals of the era.... until now, we have covered Fiddler on the Roof, Les Misérables and Notre Dame de Paris

I'm so looking forward to the rest of the course where we will learn about Miss Saigon, West Side Story, Joseph and His Amazing Techicolor Dreamcoat (my favourite!!), Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom of the Opera

Here's a youtube link to the song "Master of the House" from Les Misérables.... it's really amazing.... the comic relief presented by M. Thénardier and Madame Thénardier

95 days to go!

My countdown calender

My room

Trip to Gyeongju....

Disaster!!! Bad accommodations, bad food, lousy host..... bad bad bad...... Kinda wasted my S$100 on a 2 days 1 night trip..... i think i actually paid to torture myself..... haiz.... some photos from the trip

Started the day with a 3hour bus ride from KAIST to Gyeongju.
Gyeongju lies in the far southeastern corner of North Gyeongsang Province, on the coast of the Korean East Sea (Sea of Japan). It was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla which happened to the first dynasty that unified the once divided Korean peninsula.

The first stop in Gyeongju was "lunch".... i would actually call that appetizer, nope, let's call tat "food sampling".....

Menu for 4 people: lotsa n lotsa Leaves, 2 small fish, 4 small slices of omelette, ikan bilis, preserved chilli, kimchi, some preserved vegetable tat smelt like garbage(i'm not kidding), bean sprouts...... and a small plate of stir-fried beef (exactly 3 even smaller slices of beef per person)..... Tadah! Lunch is served!! Probably the worst lunch ever in my Korean adventure. Thanks a lot ISO president!!

2nd stop was Gyeongju World Culture Expo where we learnt Korean traditional martial arts, Sunmudo and had tea...

Next, we mounted a tower that's 84m high and had an image of a pagoda carved out of its centre... the view up there was ok...

3rd stop was Gyeongju Folk Craft Village.... not a bad place actually.....

Look at the pathetic lodging arrangements..... ok la, it's not bad a place..... it's actually a good place to sleep, for 4 PEOPLE!!!! There are only 4 beds in the entire apartment.... And ISO (thanks again hor!!) squeezed 30 guys into that apartment..... not that i'm complaining, where is my S$100 spent? In the end, we had to sleep on the cold hard floor.... resulting in body ache for the next day....

The 2nd day was spent visiting Seokulam Grotto and Bulguksa Temple.

Seokulam Grotto, one of UNESCO Cultural Heritage & national treasure, was made in 751AD and exemplifies one of the best Buddhist sculptures in the world.

Bulguksa Temple
One of UNESCO Cultural Heritage & No.1 Historic and Scenic Site appointed by the government.
This is the largest, and the most famous temple in Korea, built in 751AD.

Dinner was Samgyetang 삼계탕, which literally translates to Ginseng Chicken soup....

It is basically a whole young chicken stuffed with glutinous rice and boiled in a broth of Korean ginseng, Chinese red dates, chestnut and garlic.
And again, i've something to say about the broth.... is it me or is the so-called "broth" merely plain water that looks slightly chalky....

*Arghh, want to kill ISO president*

Chuseok Festival aka Korean Thanksgiving Day aka Mid-Autumn Festival

14 September was Chuseok Day, and the entire campus and Daejeon turned into a ghost town overnight. This is a very major and special festival for the Koreans (probably the biggest festival of the year). The day before and day after Chuseok are all holidays, which meant that Monday 15 September was also a holiday...

Since almost every single eatery and major departmental store was closed, we had to find something to do.... Fortunately, we met 2 kind souls on our previous Chilli Festival trip and they invited us to join a hiking event to Bomunsan.

Samgyeopsal 삼겹살

Samgyeopsal is a popular Korean dish. Commonly served as an evening meal, it consists of thick, fatty slices of pork belly meat cooked on a grill at the diners' table. Prior to consumption, the large slices of meat are cut into smaller pieces with scissors. A common way to consume the meat is to place a slice inside a lettuce or other green leaf with some cooked rice and ssamjang, a paste made out of chili paste (gochujang) and soybean paste (doenjang). It is also common to serve samgyeopsal with large green chilies and slices of garlic, as well as a spring onion salad. The cost of eating Samgyeopsal is about ₩7,000 and the price includes free flow side dishes.... quite a bargain!

I miss Singapore!!

***Update: Photos at http://www.bubbleshare.com/album/447591/overview & http://www.bubbleshare.com/album/454877/overview

Really..... I can't believe that I'm actually missing Singapore when I have only been 2 weeks away... that's why I haven't been blogging so regularly these days.... was feeling quite upset for the better part of the last 2 weeks...
Before I left Singapore, I was thinking about this very issue.... "Will I miss anything from S'pore?" and my reply then was a definite "NO!!".... but now, I have to admit that I really feel like going back....
First, the admin system here at KAIST is really not very friendly towards foreigners.... the facilities(amenities) are not very well maintained.... the entire school has only 3 printers for us to print our notes.... can you believe it? NUS is really very good!!!
Second, the food... Aiyoyo.... the canteen food really "Sucks".... i really don't want to use that word, but I couldn't find any other word to describe the state of the food served in the canteen.... but on the bright side, I think I lost some good weight... also, there is this perpetual Kimchi stench no matter where I go (be it the lecture halls or my dormitory...)
Third, and the most vexing part for me.... I wanted to read Ordinary Differential Equations here but I discovered that the syllabus here is very different from NUS's.... this really spoilt my plans for the remaining semesters and it could potentially delay my graduation.... haiz... enough about this.... God Bless! I'm sure all will turn out well in the end....

Okay, enough of my rantings.... Updates!! :)
